Bone Morphogenetic Protein
Bone morphogenetic protein is a naturally occuring protein in our bodies that induces blood cells to form bone. BMP used during surgery is synthetically produced bone morphogenetic protein in a high concentration that is soaked onto a collagen sponge. As the sponge dissolves, the bone morphogenic protein stimulates the cells to produce new bone. The BMP also disspears once it has completed its task of jump starting the normal bone healing process. Since there is no need to harvest bone from the patient, recipients are spared donor site pain and complications. Dr. Dobbin will be happy to discuss all grafting options with you at the time of consultation.
